"Eat Smart, Move More!"  - Move 4 Health 2009

This year's Move4Health campaign was under discussion since December 2008. For the 2009 campaign, the ISCP linked with the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI). A joint committee was formed earlier this year, meeting for the first time on January 21st. The committee consists of:

ISCP Representatives:
Ciara Sheridan (Chairperson); Aileen Barrett, Sinéad Fennell, Lisa Stafford

INDI Representatives:
Margot Brennan; Kizzy Moroney; Jenny McNulty, Cathy Monaghan.

In previous years, Move4Health has been launched at the beginning of March with campaigns running for the entire month of March with Chartered Physiotherapists visiting schools or workplaces depending on the target audience of the campaign. However, this year the launch date for the campaign was Saturday 25th April 2009 and concentrated on a one-day event.

The theme of Move4Health 2009 "Eat Smart, Move More!" was based around childhood nutrition and physical activity, where an education booklet for parents and children was launched on Saturday April 25th 2009.

The ISCP were delighted to have SuperValu come on board to assist with the "Eat Smart Move More!" Campaign.

The aim of this project was to provide a first-step resource for parents who may be worried that their child is overweight and at risk of obesity.  Recent research tells us that 1 in 4 children in Ireland are either overweight or obese.  This was a unique opportunity for both professions to come together to highlight their role in this topical area of health promotion.

The "Eat Smart, Move More!"information booklet was available at participating SuperValu stores throughout Ireland on Saturday 25th April 2009 (see list of participating stores below) where there was a Chartered Physiotherapist and Dietitian in attendance to answer any queries or concerns parents had regarding how they can develop good eating and exercise habits.

As part of the "Eat Smart, Move More!" campaign a radio advertisement ran (see below for times it will be aired) on TodayFM, commencing on Monday 20th April 2009.

Move 4 Health 2008 - Get Up & Go!

The 2008 campaign was entitled 'Get Up & Go!' and focused on adults of all ages. The aim of the campaign was to promote exercise and activity for health and psychological benefits. Move4Health ran throughout the month of March.

Chartered Physiotherapists promoted the campaign in their local areas - and were available to give advice and help to local work forces.

The main advice for people of all ages who want to increase their activity level is to ‘Get Up and Go' - with the following guidelines:

  • Have a check up with your GP before starting;
  • Set an attainable goal - e.g. to walk for 30 minutes twice weekly - and then increase this level of activity;
  • Aim to get active for 30 minutes at least 5 times a week;
  • Find a friend who wants to ‘get active';
  • Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing and footwear;
  • Listen to your body - if you become dizzy or nauseous or feel uncomfortable - then STOP and REST.

There are many well-established benefits to taking exercise. It can:

  • Reduce stress levels;
  • Reduce the risk of developing diseases such as type II diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer;
  • Improve your sleep pattern;
  • Help manage conditions such as back pain.

Ulster Bank sponsored the 2008 Move4Health posters and leaflets. Speaking on Ulster Bank's involvement, Patrick Farrell, Head of Product Management Ulster Bank (ROI), stated: "Ulster Bank is delighted to be supporting the 2008 Move4Health initiative with the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.  With increasing demands on people's time, this campaign highlights the importance of including exercise in our weekly schedule as it is vital for both mental and physical health. We look forward to seeing people across Ireland being encouraged to "Get up and Go" over the coming month."
