Learning Objectives

The objectives of the course are that participants will:

·         Expand their knowledge and understanding of key leadership theories and concepts.

·         Learn about the evidence base for leadership models and leadership development approaches in healthcare.

·         Develop awareness of their leadership strengths and the areas that require development.

·         Advance their knowledge and skills in change management and its application in the healthcare setting.

·         Learn strategies and tactics to plan, introduce and implement a change initiative in their workplace.

·         Reflect on their application of their learning from this course and use their conclusions to plan and implement future leadership projects and initiatives.

Event Description

Over five evening sessions the theory of leadership and change will be covered, participants will engage in whole-class discussions, small group work and experiential project work. Participants will complete a change project in their workplace.

Participants should have an idea of a change project that they would like to implement in their workplace when starting the course.
The change project may be on anything of interest to the participant but should fall within one of three categories:

  • A change in practice or delivery within a service
  • A quality improvement initiative
  • Innovation within an existing service

Presenter Profile

Dr. Emma Stokes BSc (Physio), MSc (Research), MScMgMt, PhD is deputy head of physiotherapy and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. She currently serves as the President of WCPT. Her research focuses on professional practice, both national and international. 

Dr McGowan graduated with a degree in physiotherapy from Trinity College Dublin in 2010. She worked clinically as a physiotherapist in New Zealand before returning to Trinity in 2013 to complete her PhD. Her doctoral research investigated leadership in the profession of physiotherapy in Ireland. Following completion of her PhD in 2017, Dr McGowan became a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiotherapy. Her current research is exploring leadership and leadership development in allied health professionals.
