Biographies for Lucy Gwynne and Michelle Kudhail
Lucy and Michelle started working together in 1993 in an inpatient neurological rehabilitation hospital and have both specialised in this field since then.
In 2003 they began teaching post graduate courses across the UK and in 2013 they were invited to Denmark by Professors Shumway-Cook and Woollacott who were retiring from the lecture circuit and ran a ‘Teach the teachers’ course for selected people. This offered a unique insight and exclusive material.
They have developed a range of courses that continuously evolve with the advancement of evidence based practice and inclusion of new publications of research.
Courses delivered:

Balance Rehabilitation
Biomechanical analysis of movement, including Gait analysis and Sit to stand
Management of Spasticity in the Upper Limb Following Stroke

Lucy’s current role is Physiotherapy Lead for Neurorehabilitation at South Warwickshire Foundation Trust. This has a specialist brain injury and stroke unit, offering rehabilitation to complex patients.
With over 30 years of experience, she has noted how rehabilitation has developed from the early days of movement science, when therapists began to take a more active part in research, to now, with the floodgates of evidence opening ever wider.
She has been lucky enough to work with some of the great and good amongst physiotherapy advancement including Professors Carr and Shepherd.
She has completed Masters’ Level in Movement science, Teaching and learning for Physiotherapists and Innovations in Physiotherapy and was guest lecturer on the movement science course at Nottingham.

Michelle is a highly skilled clinician with experience in healthcare having worked in the NHS and Independent sector in the UK.
Michelle is a Neurophysiotherapist and acts in a Consultant capacity and as an expert witness in medico-legal cases. She is a Clinical Advisor for Elaros 24/7 (digital healthcare and research company) and the National Neurological Rehabilitation Chambers
Her career started with achievement of a BSc in Physiotherapy in 1991 following which she commenced employment within Southampton General Hospital, gaining experience in a range of specialisms. Whilst there her interest in Neurology and Neurorehabilitation was nurtured and then enhanced by a year working in a Rehab centre in Chicago, with the opportunity to learn new skills. On return to the UK, she enhanced her expertise by assisting in developing the gait laboratory within the Neurorehab hospital and expanding her skills in biomechanical analysis, orthotics and spasticity management. She completed a masters level Injection Therapy course (2006) and Non-medical prescribing qualification (2008) at Coventry University and whilst working as a lead clinician in a regional specialist NHS hospital (Central England Rehabilitation Unit).
Michelle has been an invited speaker at International conferences (World Federation of Neurorehabilitation in Hong Kong and Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine in Queenstown, New Zealand) and many National conferences and forums, including the Rehabilitation Clinical Reference Group Summit.

This 2 day course is based on the work by Anne Shumway Cook and Marjorie Woollacott (Authors of the classic textbook ‘Balance rehabilitation- translating research into Clinical practice’). It will teach you how to assess and treat the multi factorial aspects of balance in a time effective way.

Course Aims

  • To provide a framework for multi factorial balance assessment of patients in community and/or hospital settings.
  • To develop evidence based, patient tailored treatment programmes that patients can follow in a safe and effective way with and without the therapist present.

Course outline

  • Overview of postural control systems i.e. integrated theory of motor control and the multisensory components of balance (cognitive, motor and sensory)
  • Assessment of motor components of balance
  • Evidence based treatments for retraining motor components of balance
  • Assessment of sensory components of balance
  • Evidence based treatments for retraining sensory components of balance
  • Assessment of cognitive components of balance
  • Evidence based treatments for retraining cognitive components of balance

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the participant should be able to:

  • Assess all components of balance in the clinical setting.
  • Evidence the reason for interventions based on current research.
  • Develop patient tailored treatment strategies to address each aspect of balance.

Who will benefit

•              It is aimed at therapists working with people who have balance issues from any cause
