Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology and its Relevance in Pain Management introduces you to the basic neuroscience of pain and the interrelationship between psychological, physiological and environmental processes in pain.

 

Neuro-anatomical, physiological, pharmacological, and biochemical mechanisms involved in nociception, including peripheral and central sensitization, are explored. The contribution of psychological factors such as mood and cognition will also be explored as will how various factors modify or maintain pain perception and behaviour. The course is fully online and runs for five weeks.

Course Aims and Objectives

This course aims to provide you an opportunity to consider:

  • the basic neuroscience of pain and the interrelationship between psychological, physiological and environmental processes in pain
  • current understanding of the biological processes involved in the perception of pain
  • current of the psychological processes in the perception and expression of pain
  • the various contributors to pain within the biopsychosocial model
  • key concepts/details of mechanisms based on the latest available research evidence
  • the relevance of a biopsychosocial approach to assessment and management of pain problems

Content*

The content of this CPD course has been chosen and structured as an introduction to neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and its relevance to the field of pain management.  The content consists of five units of study in total – one per week:

  1. Introduction to the Basics
  2. Peripheral Mechanisms
  3. Spinal Mechanisms
  4. Brain Mechanisms
  5. The Environment and Cognition
