Presenter Details Karl Gilligan is a qualified Strength & Conditioning Coach and Sport Scientist. He has extensive experience working in elite sport having worked with the Ireland U-19 Rugby team, Leinster Rugby, Olympic athletes from 2008 and 2012 Games, professional golfers, boxers and inter-county GAA football teams. More recently, he has been appointed as the lead Strength & Conditioning coach for World Rugby in preparation for the 2023 World Cup.
Karl qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science and a MSc in Strength & Conditioning from St. Mary’s University, London, UK. He was the first accredited member of the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS) in Strength and Conditioning, and is also a professional member with the NSCA (CSCS).

The Youth Strength & Conditioning Certification (YSCC) course offers an evidence-based introduction to the theory and practice of strength and conditioning for young athletes. The 3 day certification course focusses on training centred on the concept of long-term athletic development (LTAD) of young athletes from 6 to 17 year olds.

During the course, the participant will be provided a full exercise library for movement skill development, strength, power, speed and agility. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and coaching skills for developing youth athleticism within the community and sport-related environments.


The YSCC Course is accredited for international CPD credits with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Course aim:

  • To provide participants with both a theoretical and practical understanding of Strength & Conditioning for young athletes.
  • Upskill healthcare professionals on the usage of Strength & Conditioning for exercise rehabilitation strategies.
  • Assumes little to no previous experience in Strength & Conditioning.

Target audience:

For healthcare professionals who want to implement Strength & Conditioning programs to young athletes as part of their exercise rehabilitation strategies.
