Expression of Interest for Physiotherapists working on a contractual across IRFU programmes


The IRFU are currently looking to expand their bank of contractual physiotherapists to work across performance and development programmes including the National 7s, Women’s XVs and Men’s and Women’s underage and talent identification pathways.


Summary of key responsibilities


Bank physiotherapists will provide physio support to allocated teams as part of the wider inter-disciplinary team. Outlined below are the key responsibilities necessary for the roles as well as squad specific activities that may be required over time:

  • Management of injury and illness of players in the context of training or competition environment
  • Carry out skilled assessment and implement safe and evidence-based interventions
  • Work as part of inter-disciplinary team in the management of players and in delivery of effective service in high performance environment
  • Design and implement rehabilitation programmes
  • Provide appropriate strapping to players
  • Provide pitch side cover for training and matches at competition level
  • Travel to competition as sole provider of medical services with team to national and international events
  • Provide appropriate communication to both player and management across different platforms
  • Maintain up to date records and note keeping


Squad Specific Requirements

N.B. The following is intended for guidance only. The exact nature of squad specific provision will be determined by competition schedules, player availability and performance priorities.


National 7s programme

  • Require physiotherapy services at the National High Performance Centre for non-travelling and long term injured members of both Men’s and Women’s National squads.


  • Travel with senior or developmental squads to international competition or training camps 


Women’s XVs programme


  • Assist Physiotherapy lead at training camps covering service provision on site of camp or competition venue including team accommodation


  • Travel with main squad to international competition or training camps


Underage programmes

  • Provide Physio support to squad as sole provider of medical services on site for training camps and competition


  • Travel to international event as team physio for event


Under 18 programme

  • Needs to complete Vetting process
  • Experience pitch side cover a regional level for training and competition of a field based sport
  • Understanding of the young athlete and development stages
  • Demonstrate appropriate level of communication to coaching and management staff and parents
  • Ability to organise and present group education, mobility, activation and movement sessions to this age group
  • Commit to the development of their knowledge and skills in working with development player in high performance environment


Potential Time Commitment


7s programme

  • Physio service at HPC – 4 days per week when squad is travelling (up to 10 weeks across the season). specified time -opportunity for 8-10 periods across Sept – June season


  • Travel to camp or competition – duration of travel 5- 16 days depending on location and level of competition - opportunity for 8-10 periods across Sept – June season


WXVS Programme

  • National camp training - weekend cover for camps
  • Travel to competition duration of travel 3-5 days for competition over 6 Nations and Autumn test and other internal events through WXVS season


U18 Programmes

  • National camp training - weekend cover for camps
  • Travel to competition duration of travel 3-5 days for competition


Under 18 7s programme

Girls - x6/8 weekend camps during Summer months with 2/3 European based competitions

Boys- x3/4 weekend camps during Summer months with 2 European based competitions


Under 18 XVs programme

Girls – TBC weekend camps outside of WXV’s national season

Boys – TBC


Personnel Specifications


Essential Criteria 

  • BSc Physiotherapy degree
  • CORU or HCPC registration  
  • Current professional indemnity insurance
  • Pitch side acute trauma care qualification - or ability to complete course prior to agreed time of work.B. Level 2 required for World Rugby events
  • Previous work in a multidisciplinary environment 


Necessary Experience/Skills

  • Clinical experience within musculoskeletal and sport environment
  • Assessment, treatment and management of injury across acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints
  • Understanding of rehabilitation principles of injury in line with stage of pathology, objective markers and performance goals
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work within an inter-disciplinary environment
  • Providing pitch side cover to rugby teams
  • Ability to work under pressure

Additional Experience required for travel to competitions:

  • Experience of providing physiotherapy sport at international venues
  • Experience of traveling with sporting team to international competitions.


Desirable Criteria 

  • 2 or more year’s clinical experience working as physiotherapist
  • Previous experience working in a high-performance sport setting
  • Experience with the rugby athlete

€250/ day

Elite and Senior programme cover

€325/ day

All match day cover

€325/ day
