Description

Overview Of The Post

UPMC Presently Provides High Level Sports Injury Management Through Tertiary Referral Sports Surgery And Orthopaedic Clinics At UPMC In Ireland Sites. To Support This Referral Pathway, A UPMC Sports Medicine Program Is Being Developed That Will Initially Serve The South East Region, But Which Will Progress To A National Scale Through A Network Model. The First Dedicated UPMC Sports Medicine Facility For Diagnosing And Rehabilitation Of Sports-related Injuries Will Be Located Onsite At The WIT Arena In Waterford.

The Lead Sports Physiotherapist Will Be Responsible For:

  • leadership And Management Of Physiotherapists Across The UPMC In Ireland Sites;
  • physiotherapy-related Aspects Of Sports Science Research And Orthopaedic Outcomes Tracking;
  • onsite Provision Of Sports Physiotherapy At UPMC Sports Medicine Clinic At WIT Arena.

Responsibilities

Managerial

  • Responsible For The Management, Staffing, And Operations Pertaining To All Physiotherapy-related Activities Across UPMC In Ireland 
  • Assist In The Development And Improvement Of Evidence-based Protocols For All Areas Of Physiotherapy Within UPMC Sports Medicine And UPMC Orthopaedic Care
  • Spearhead The Implementation And Adoption Of A Physiotherapy Electronic Patient Management System Across All UPMC In Ireland Sites
  • Close Collaboration And Monthly Updates With UPMC In Pittsburgh Colleagues; Visits To Pittsburgh As Required For Purpose Of Service/competency Development
  • Lead All Physiotherapy-related Aspects Of Sports Science Research And Orthopaedic Outcomes Tracking
  • Responsible For Equipment Used In Carrying Out Physiotherapy Duties, And To Adhere To The Departmental Health And Safety Policy. This Must Include Competence To Use The Equipment And To Ensure The Safe Use Of Equipment By Others Through Teaching, Training And Supervision Of Practice, Including Manual Handling In Line With The UPMC Whitfield Policy
  • Be Aware Of The Health And Safety Aspects Of Your Work And Implement Any Policies Which May Be Required To Improve The Safety Of Your Work Area, Including The Prompt Reporting And Recording Of Accidents.
  • Immediately Report Any Clinical Incident, Complete An Incident Form And Action Any Recommendations To Prevent Recurrence.
  • Adhere To All UPMC Policies.

Clinical:

  • To Fulfil The Role Of A Chartered Physiotherapist In The Assessment, Diagnosis And Rehabilitation Of All Injuries; With Particular Focus And Expertise In Sports Rehabilitation
  • Be Actively Involved In An Interdisciplinary Approach Of Working Within The UPMC Sports Medicine Clinic Involving Physiotherapist, Orthopaedic Surgeon, And Sports Medicine Physician
  • To Deliver And Evaluate The Physiotherapy Service Provided Throughout The UPMC Sports Medicine Clinic On A Day-to-day Basis, And Contributing To The Achievement Of Service Objectives, Facilitating Change As Necessary
  • To Plan And Organise Time To Effect The Physiotherapy Service Within A Weekly Rota Whilst Planning For Extra-ordinary Scheduling Of Treatments If Required And Guide Same For Any Questions Arising From UPMC In Ireland Sites
  • To Accept Clinical Responsibility For A Designated Caseload Of Patients, And To Organise This Efficiently And Effectively With Regard To Clinical Priorities And Use Of Time
  • To Undertake The Comprehensive Assessment Of Patients, Including Those With Complex Presentations.
  • To Formulate An Appropriate, Individual Management And/or Treatment Programme, Using Clinical Reasoning Skills, Setting Objectives, Timed Measurable Goals And Ensuring Treatment Progression With A Variety Of Manual And Self-management Techniques.
  • To Provide Spontaneous And Planned Advice, Teaching And Instruction To Relatives, Carers And Other Professionals To Promote Understanding Of The Aims Of Physiotherapy And To Ensure A Consistent Approach To Patient Care
  • Apply A High Level Of Understanding Of The Effects And Impact Of Illness/disability And Injury On The Patients’ Abilities And Recommend Appropriate Lifestyle Changes And Provide Appropriate Clinical Advice To Patients, Relatives And Carers.

  • Represent UPMC At National And International Conferences
  • To Participate In Flexible Working Hours And Location Of Practice To Optimise The Availability Of The Service For Patients, Including Out Of Hours Service As Required, Often Working In Isolation.

  • To Actively Participate In The Staff Appraisal Scheme And Development Of Personal Development Plans As An Appraiser And Appraisee. To Be Able To Identify Individual Needs For Development.  To Provide Timely And Constructive Feedback To Others As Appropriate And Facilitate Means To Achieve Development Needs And Ensure Others Do Likewise.
  • To Undertake The Measurement And Evaluation Of Your Work And Current Practices Through The Use Of Evidence Based Practice Projects, Audit And Outcome Measures, And To Make Recommendations For Change.
  • To Maintain Accurate And Up To Date Documentation In Line With Legal And Departmental Requirements, Including The Production Of Appropriate Reports, Letters And Treatment Summaries

Candidate Specification: Skills  

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Hold A Degree In Physiotherapy And Be Either A Member Of The Irish Or UK Society Of Chartered Physiotherapists
  • Extensive Injury Screening, Diagnostic, Manual Therapy And Sports Rehabilitation Understanding
  • Extensive Knowledge In Injury Prevention Methods And Recovery Strategies
  • Evidence Of An Extensive And Structured CPD Portfolio – Including Post Graduate Qualifications

Desirable:

  • Post Graduate Diploma Or MSc In The Field Of Sports Medicine
  • Previous Research And/or Lecture Experience In Sports Medicine
  • At Least 3 Years Working In Elite Or Professional Sports

Experience:

  • At Least 8 Years Working As Chartered Physiotherapist
  • Significant Experience Working In A Professional Sporting Club And Working In An Interdisciplinary Sports Science And Medicine Team
  • Significant Experience In The Delivery Of Injury Diagnosis, Treatment And Prevention Strategies Within A Sporting Environment
