QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy
  • CORU registered
  • Must have post graduate studies in Hand Therapy and have a minimum of 3 years working at Senior Level as a Hand Therapist. IAHT and BAHT membership desirable.
  • BAHT and/or CHT accreditation desirable
  • The Hand Therapist must act in accordance with the rules of professional conduct of AOTI / ISCP.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be responsible for the provision of a high quality Hand therapy service in accordance with standards of professional practice and demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise in the area of splint making and hand therapy.

 

  • To manage their own clinical caseload appropriate to the post and to develop the Hand service in a progressive manner.

 

  • To be responsible for assessment planning, development, implementation and appropriate and timely modification of treatment/intervention that are patient centred in line with best practice for the relevant patient group.

 

  • Be responsible for realistic and appropriate goal setting in partnership with the patient, their

         family, the consultant and other team   members using their specialist clinical skills and knowledge..

  • Provide appropriate care in a timely accurate and safe manner.

 

  • Develop appropriate and individualised patient education and discharge planning and utilise

         available resources for same.

 

  • Recognise own limitations in clinical judgement and collaborate with other health care team

         members within the defined clinical area in an effective and open way in accordance with the

         patient care plan to enhance effective patient care.

 

  • Assist the Allied Therapy Manager in service development encompassing policy

        development and implementation

 

  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.

 

  • Comply with health and Safety Policies and procedures which includes ensuring equipment

         used on the  service is maintained in proper working order and report defects as per Hospital policy.

 

  • Maintain documents according to the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic.

          To review and update protocols, exercise sheets and all documentation as required.

 

  • To manage the ordering and supply of equipment .Articulate clinical reasoning regarding

         Splint material  choice/design

 

  • Report relevant information verbally and in writing to appropriate personnel.

          To deal with patient queries and complaints in liaison with Allied Therapy Manager

 

  • Respond appropriately to patient/family requests and questions.

 

  • Communicate appropriately with colleagues and other members of the health care team

         in  providing a quality service, taking the lead role as required.

 

  • To ensure that accurate and relevant statistics of activity level are maintain

 

 

2     Professional Expectations

 

  • Operate within the scope of practice of the AOTI / ISCP and Irish association of Hand Therapists.

 

  • Communicate and work in co-operation with the referring Consultant, Allied Therapy Manager and other team members in providing a quality service.

 

  • Display accurate documentation in keeping with assessment protocols’ and treatment protocols

 

  • Be involved in teaching to Junior and Senior staff members and members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

 

  • Be a clinical resource to the MDT

 

  • Be involved in clinical audit, service development and show a commitment to continuing professional development

 

  • Participate in mandatory training programmes. Basic Life Support / Manual Handling / Hand Hygiene & Fire Training

 

  • Participate in the yearly /ongoing staff performance appraisals

 

  • Present a professional appearance and is punctual and conform to Blackrock Clinic Uniform Policy, detailed in the Staff Hand Book
