Dizziness and vertigo

Dizziness, vertigo and imbalance can have a negative impact on a persons’ quality of life, making it difficult for them to perform and enjoy their normal daily activities. Common symptoms include:

  • dizziness on certain head movements
  • vertigo – a feeling that you or the room around you is moving
  • nausea and vomiting
  • general loss of balance
  • reduced activity due to avoidance of activities that provoke symptoms
    neck tension

How can physiotherapy help?

Vestibular rehabilitation (VR) is a specialised form of physiotherapy that is effective in reducing dizziness and vertigo, associated falls and improving quality of life. Specialist physiotherapists provide personalised VR programmes which are clinically effective in reducing distressing symptoms and improving quality of life.

What will happen when I visit a physiotherapist?

Following an examination, your specialist physiotherapist will develop a personalised treatment plan that includes specific head, body, and eye exercises.
A management plan may include:

  • Eye and head movement exercises
  • Exercises to improve standing balance and walking
  • Specific techniques to reposition fragments in the inner ear which cause dizziness in BPPV
  • Education and advice on activities of daily living to improve confidence & function
  • Advice on falls reduction/prevention.
