Event Description

Phase 1 of the National Certificate in Strength & Conditioning (NCSC) Course is specifically aimed at Physiotherapists who want to understand the fundamentals of Strength & Conditioning. Phase 1 is ideal for those who want to deliver Strength & Conditioning services from junior through to senior level. Participants are introduced to a system of training that have been used to coach athletes/players at World Cups and Olympic Games. 
 
During this 3 day course, participants will learn everything from movement screening, fitness testing and profiling, linear speed, Olympic lifting, plyometrics, program design and much more.
 
Course content includes:
  • System of training for Strength & Conditioning
  • Movement Compensation Screen (MCS)
  • Corrective exercises
  • Fitness testing & profiling
  • Acceleration and multidirectional speed
  • Olympic lifting
  • Plyometrics
  • Energy system development (ESD)

Presenter Profile

Karl Gilligan:
Karl Gilligan is the founder and Education Director of KG Elite Performance. Karl qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science and MSc in Strength & Conditioning from St. Mary’s University, London, UK. He was the first formally accredited member of the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS) in Strength and Conditioning, and is also a professional member with the NSCA (CSCS). His research interests include movement screens for injury prevention, strength and power development and speed biomechanics.
 
In 2012, he devised the National Certificate in Strength & Certificate (NCSC) course which has now become the industry leader in Strength & Conditioning Certification for fitness professionals and healthcare practitioners. Since 2014 he has grown the courses internationally where they are now delivered in UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and China. 
 
Karl has extensive experience working in elite sport having worked with the Ireland U-19 Rugby Team, Leinster Rugby, Olympic athletes, professional golfers, boxers and inter-county GAA football teams. In addition, he was a keen sportsman during his playing days having represented his province Connacht at all underage levels in Rugby as well as his county Sligo in GAA.
 
Mike McGurn:
Mike McGurn has the prestigious honour of training three National Senior Irish Teams in different codes and winning two World titles in two different sports. In addition, Mike has overseen the physical conditioning of these National teams at 3 World Cup tournaments and 8 Six Nations tournaments.
 
After graduating with a BSc in Sport Science, he became fitness coach for Workington Rugby League club. He quickly became sought after by the cream of Rugby League. Following this, Mike helped guide St Helens to the elusive treble – Challenge Cup, Super League and World Club Champions in the 2000/2001 season. Mike has also worked as Fitness Coach in the Premier League for 3 seasons with Hull City Football Club and was Fitness Consultant at Leeds United Football Club and Everton Football Club.
 
In 2002, he returned to Ireland after being head-hunted by Eddie O’Sullivan to join the national Rugby Union team as Head of Strength and Conditioning. In his tenure of 8 years, he was involved in 84 International test games with Ireland, he totally revolutionised the training structures and systems of the squad laying the foundations for what has become the most successful Irish Rugby Team ever. In 2008 he began working with boxer Bernard Dunne, helping the Dubliner become Super Bantam-Weight Champion of the World. In November 2008 and 2011 he enjoyed more success, this time with the Irish Compromise Rules team when they won the series beating Austrailia in both tests.
 
Mike reguarly presents at conferences on Strength and Conditioning in Australia, Poland, UK and the US. including the UEFA Soccer European Pro Licence and Australian Strength and Conditioning Association Conference.
