Learning Objectives

To understand the multifactorial nature of Low Back Pain and how physiotherapy management is ideally placed to target biological, psychological and social contributers using up to date evidence-based practice.

To integrate exercise medicine and pain neuroscience within this biopsychosocial approach.

To improve skills in educating patients about their back pain, hence empowering them to take an active role in self-management.

To develop clinically reasoned therapeutic exercise programmes, using a combination of functional rehabilitation, motor control and strength and conditioning principles.

Event Description

Low Back Pain is the greatest contributor to global disability. Although it is highly prevalent and extensive research has been conducted, Back Pain remains one of the most difficult conditions to manage for those working in musculoskeletal practice.  Non-specific diagnostic labels, complex psychosocial interactions and a plethora of treatment approaches all add to this difficulty.

In this one-day course, Thomas delivers a clear and simplified approach to managing Back Pain. Drawing on numerous schools of thought, up to date research and his own experience, he presents an evidenced based framework that will help clinicians make sense of the patient in front of them  and to choose effective management strategies.

Throughout this highly practical course there is a strong emphasis on integrating Exercise Medicine and Neuroscience. Participants will learn how to deliver clear evidenced based Education, as a first major step to managing this patient group. Teaching then focuses on developing individualised therapeutic exercise programs, blending Motor Control and Strength & Conditioning principles. The course closes with a series of case studies demonstrating the real life application of the techniques, allowing participants to transfer skills directly into their existing clinical practice.
