Learning Objectives

This programme will allow participants to immediately apply the skills they learn to their everyday work practices. Following the first sessions, participants will have 12 weeks to complete a change project in their workplace. Each participant will identify and plan a change initiative or quality improvement plan in their workplace. They will then present the results of their project and their reflections on their experience of implementing the change on the morning of the second day of teaching.

The change project may be on anything of interest to the participant but should address one or more of the following aims:

  • A change in practice or delivery within a service
  • A quality improvement initiative
  • Innovation within an existing service

The combination of learning theory and applying it in their work environment will allow participants to develop leadership capabilities appropriate to their situation and also enable them to effectively drive change and improvement both immediately and in the future.

The intended learning outcomes of the course are that participants will:

  • Expand their knowledge and understanding of key leadership theories and concepts.
  • Learn about the evidence base for leadership models and leadership development approaches in healthcare.
  • Develop awareness of their leadership practices and strengths and the areas that require development.
  • Advance their knowledge and skills in change management and its application in the healthcare setting.
  • Learn strategies and tactics to plan, introduce and implement a change initiative in their workplace. Including specific strategies such as pitching ideas, negotiation, conflict management and communication techniques.
  • Reflect on their application of their learning from this course and use their conclusions to plan and implement future leadership projects and initiatives.

Event Description

In the feedback on a previous leadership development course run by this presenter, 100% of respondents said that they would recommend this course to colleagues. Previous participants have also commented:

“Really enjoyed it. Very interesting and nice to do something different to the clinical side of the job.”

“Very interesting and positive to attend a course that is not clinically related as I tend to prioritise this type of CPD which on reflection are not always the impediments in more effective working. Team working and progressing our services depends so much on our ability to identify how to lead effectively”
