| Presenter Details | Ciara Ryan is a Clinical Specialist physiotherapist working as part of the National MDT for Vaginal Mesh Complications at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles St Ciara has specialised in Pelvic Health physiotherapy since 2010, working in both Ireland and Australia. She is a former chair of the ISCP CPPHC. She is passionate about exercise and working in the area of women’s wellness to facilitate optimum physical health. Aoife Cullen is a Clinical Specialist physiotherapist working as part of the National MDT for Vaginal Mesh Complications at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles St. Aoife has worked solely in Pelvic Health for the last ten years, having training in the area while working in the Lois Hole Women’s Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. She completed her Masters of Physiotherapy in Women’s health in 2021 via the University of Bradford. She is a former chair of the ISCP CPPHC. |

The Aim of this course is to develop introductory level knowledge and skills required by physiotherapists to perform examination, assessment and treatment of the Female Pelvic Floor Complex, while adhering to current best practice guidelines.

Hold current CORU registration

Be currently practicing in a country where vaginal examination, assessment and intervention is within the scope of practice of physiotherapists registered in that country
This is a blended course of online learning and an in-person workshop.

Contact hours - 16 (7.5 online/7.5 in person)
We have decided to release all videos at the one time this year – from Sept 7th but we recommend working through one a week, so you do not feel overwhelmed at the end
Module 1 ONLINE – Professional Issues and Anatomy
Module 2 ONLINE – Physiology and Continence Mechanism
Module 3 ONLINE – Assessment of the Pelvic Floor
Module 4 ONLINE – Treatment
● Pelvic Floor Rehab
● Biofeedback and NMES
● Nice guidelines
● Bulkamid/Botox/Meds
● Investigations and onward management (Uroflow/Urodynamics)
Practical Day Saturday 17th Oct – It is essential to complete all the online theory modules before attending the practical day
Practical day components -
● Review of Professional issues (Patient information and informed consent/ communication and documentation/ clinical governance)
● Observation of Vaginal examination
● Vaginal examinations (Peer Physical Examination) with supervision
● Intro to Biofeedback/NMES/Devices
Please note that the practical day where appropriate will involve Peer Physical Examination. This is the process of programme participants acting as models for other participants to experience vaginal examination and assessment.
All participants have the right to opt in or out of the practical sessions. Female participants may choose to act as a model during the practical sessions, however they have the right to decline to be examined by any specific course participants due to embarrassment or other factors.
In the case of a participant declining to complete at least one vaginal examination on a ‘live’ model it will not be possible to complete the skills checklist and the participant will not be able to complete the programme (see ‘programme requirements’ information above).
Following completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
● Understand the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the female pelvic floor complex
● Demonstrate proficiency in performing appropriate pelvic floor examination and assessment (Subjective and Objective)
● Clinically reason assessment findings and evaluate best course of management
● Understand a range of treatment options for pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction
● Communicate assessment findings and treatment options clearly, respectively and effectively to patients
● Provide a chosen intervention safely and effectively
● Document the above accurately
