Exercise Snacking and Nutrition Management for Older Adults at Risk of Functional Decline - HSCP Funded
Venue: TBC
Dates: TBC
Format: 1 day, in-person
Cost: €20
EOI to open: TBC
Participant allocation:
This is an interdisciplinary event organised by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) and Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI). The course has been funded by the HSCP Office, HSE.
As such, places are available to physiotherapists in the publicly funded healthcare service only.
Background:
Sarcopenia and frailty present significant and growing challenges within Irish health services, contributing to functional decline, loss of independence and increased healthcare utilisation among older adults. Physiotherapists and dietitians play a significant role in prevention and management through evidence‑based exercise and nutrition interventions; however, clinicians consistently report the need for updated, practical interdisciplinary CPD in this area.
This programme builds on previous successful HSCP‑funded training by integrating established best practice with emerging evidence, including the role of accessible exercise approaches such as exercise snacking as an adjunct to traditional programmes. The course focuses on translating current research and guidelines into clinically pragmatic assessment and intervention strategies. Joint delivery with the INDI reflects the recognised importance of coordinated interdisciplinary care. The programme supports early intervention, prevention and rehabilitation delivered closer to home, in line with national priorities for healthy ageing, chronic disease management and sustainable service delivery.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the value of an integrated physiotherapy and dietetic approach to the assessment and management of sarcopenia and frailty.
-
Apply evidence‑based exercise and nutrition strategies to support skeletal muscle health in older adults.
-
Identify appropriate screening, assessment and outcome measures for sarcopenia and frailty.
-
Understand the emerging concept of exercise snacking and its role as a realistic adjunct to traditional exercise prescription for older adults.
