Mangement of the Unwell Patient in Cardiac Rehabilitation - HSCP Funded
Venue: Merlin Park Hospital, Galway
Dates: Saturday 11th July 2026
Time: 9:30am - 4:45pm
Cost: €20
EOI Deadline: Friday 26th June, 5pm
Participant allocation:
This is multidisciplinary event organised by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) and Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI). The course has been funded by the HSCP Office, HSE.
As such, places are available to physiotherapists in the publicly funded healthcare service only.
Background:
Managing clinical deterioration in community and rehabilitation settings is an increasingly important skill for HSCPs as services expand beyond the acute hospital environment. Physiotherapists and other HSCPs working in cardiac rehabilitation and Enhanced Community Care services routinely manage individuals with complex comorbidities and varying levels of clinical stability. While Basic Life Support training is mandatory, it does not adequately address the broader clinical judgement, risk stratification and scenario‑based decision‑making required in these settings.
This programme responds to an identified learning need within cardiac and community rehabilitation services. The course focuses on practical application of skills to support early recognition of deterioration, safe decision‑making and timely escalation of care. Strengthening these competencies supports patient safety and high‑quality service delivery in line with national models of care.
Dietitians are integral members of cardiac rehabilitation and chronic disease services, and inclusion of INDI supports an interdisciplinary approach to risk factor management and secondary prevention.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Identify early warning signs and red flags indicating clinical deterioration in community and rehabilitation settings
• Apply structured risk assessment and clinical decision‑making when managing unwell patients during rehabilitation and exercise interventions
• Respond appropriately to common acute presentations, including cardiac symptoms, syncope and collapse
• Activate emergency pathways and escalate care in line with local and national protocols
• Communicate effectively within interdisciplinary teams during acute incidents in community settings
