Presenter Details Dr Emily Smyth is a Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin and a clinical researcher and
physiotherapist specialising in oncology trials. Her research focuses on exercise-based
prehabilitation and more recently, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, aiming to improve
outcomes and supportive care for people undergoing cancer treatment.

Preoperative exercise to improve fitness in patients undergoing complex surgery for cancer of the lung or oesophagus a randomised controlled trial.

Learning outcomes::-

·        Understand the role of prehabilitation in patients undergoing major lung or oesophageal cancer surgery

·        Describe the principles and delivery of preoperative high-intensity interval training (HIIT)

·        Recognise the relationship between preoperative fitness and postoperative outcomes

·        Discuss key findings from the PRE-HIIT randomised controlled trial

·        Explore the physiotherapist’s role in perioperative cancer care and enhanced recovery pathways

·        Consider how evidence-based prehabilitation programmes can be implemented in clinical practice
